Biologists Discover Why 10 Percent Of Europeans Are Safe From HIV Infection
ScienceDaily (Apr. 3, 2005) — Biologists at the University of Liverpool have discovered how the plagues of the Middle Ages have made around 10% of Europeans resistant to HIV.

Scientists have known for some time that these individuals carry a genetic mutation (known as CCR5-delta 32) that prevents the virus from entering the cells of the immune system but have been unable to account for the high levels of the gene in Scandinavia and relatively low levels in areas bordering the Mediterranean.
They have also been puzzled by the fact that HIV emerged only recently and could not have played a role in raising the frequency of the mutation to the high levels found in some Europeans today.
Professor Christopher Duncan and Dr Susan Scott from the University’s School of Biological Sciences, whose research is published in the March edition of Journal of Medical Genetics, attribute the frequency of the CCR5-delta 32 mutation to its protection from another deadly viral disease, acting over a sustained period in bygone historic times.
Some scientists have suggested this disease could have been smallpox or even bubonic plague but bubonic plague is a bacterial disease rather than a virus and is not blocked by the CCR5-delta 32 mutation.
Professor Duncan commented: “The fact that the CCR5-delta 32 mutation is restricted to Europe suggests that the plagues of the Middle Ages played a big part in raising the frequency of the mutation. These plagues were also confined to Europe, persisted for more than 300 years and had a 100% case mortality.”
Around 1900, historians spread the idea that the plagues of Europe were not a directly infectious disease but were outbreaks of bubonic plague, overturning an accepted belief that had stood for 550 years. Professor Duncan and Dr Scott illustrated in their book, Return of the Black Death (2004, Wiley), that this idea was incorrect and the plagues of Europe (1347-1660) were in fact a continuing series of epidemics of a lethal, viral, haemorrhagic fever that used the CCR5 as an entry port into the immune system.
Using computer modeling, they demonstrated how this disease provided the selection pressure that forced up the frequency of the mutation from 1 in 20,000 at the time of the Black Death to values today of 1 in 10.
Lethal, viral haemorrhagic fevers were recorded in the Nile valley from 1500 BC and were followed by the plagues of Mesopotamia (700-450BC), the plague of Athens (430BC), the plague of Justinian (AD541-700) and the plagues of the early Islamic empire (AD627-744). These continuing epidemics slowly raised the frequency from the original single mutation to about 1 in 20,000 in the 14th century simply by conferring protection from an otherwise certain death.
Professor Duncan added: “Haemorrhagic plague did not disappear after the Great Plague of London in 1665-66 but continued in Sweden, Copenhagen, Russia, Poland and Hungary until 1800. This maintenance of haemorrhagic plague provided continuing selection pressure on the CCR5-delta 32 mutation and explains why it occurs today at its highest frequency in Scandinavia and Russia.”

THIS IS MALE THEOLOGY
Dear Patriarchal Leader:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from you, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... end of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus
21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness, (Lev. 15:19-24) the problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a
pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination that homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there degrees of abomination?
7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair
around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev. 24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, as we do with people who sleep with their in-laws (Lev. 20:14)?
I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy
considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

To give my opinion in this debate, I personally believe that Matriarchy will not only free Women but will free men as well. This is because patriarchy not only oppresses Women but also men.
The lie given out by patriarchal propaganda is that men are `naturally' brutal and violent. Whereas what is really happening is that in patriarchy, we are all caught in a vicious cycle of violence and hatred. Obviously if a father beats up his sons, then his sons think this behaviour is `normal' and will beat up other people and later their own sons. Perpetuating a cycle of violence.
I personally wasn't beaten by my father, but I was made to feel ashamed of myself for not being a macho boy. And I know I wasn't alone in this, most boys I talked with had problems living up to the macho image they were suppose have. And this macho image was all around us, it was in the books and comics we read, and in the films we saw, so we all felt we had to be like John Wayne and become `real' men.
Patriarchy was started by bandits and criminals. These were men that were banished from the first Matriarchal civilizations for their anti-social behaviour and discovered they could make an easy living robbing other people.

What these men discovered was that violence gave them power. You can make other people do what you want if you
inflict violence on them, and you can have sex by raping women.
Having men like this who were able to rob, assault, rape and even murder other people with impunity, made this lifestyle attractive to other men. So these men began to join together in bandit gangs. In time these gangs became so strong that instead of robbing people they devised a protection racket. So people in villages and towns had to pay their local bandit chief, so that they will leave them alone. This was the first taxation.
These bandit leaders were not content with this began to interfere in the lives of the people more and more, setting themselves up as rulers and living within the community they `owned'. These bandits also discovered that their power depended on their violence so it was important that to keep their bandit group strong they had to train them in violence. So the men in bandit gangs were trained in violence, which means they had to inflict violence onto each other. As it was discovered that the more violent a gang became the more fearful the people were of them and the more successful they were in any conflict with other bandit gangs. Because these gang were fighting against other bandit gangs, they needed more men of violence. So they began to recruit men within the communities they ruled and teach them to be violent.
The communities would still have been ruled by Women and they would have objected to this, as they didn't want to see their sons turned into violent monsters. So violence would then be used against Women to undermine their power over their own sons.
In time these bandit chiefs became kings, and emperors and patriarchy even took over the religious life of the people creating male gods and male priests. They then set out to conquer and create a patriarchal world.
This then is why violence, fear, intimidation and hatred are the foundation of patriarchy, and men are the victims of this as well as Women. And it is this cycle of violence and fear that keeps patriarchy going.
In a world of fear and violence the most aggressive and violent people are the ones that rule the world. This is why men rule our world and not Women. If you brutalise boys they learn to hate, and can learn to be so violent that they will kill other people. If you brutalise girls it is true they also can learn to be violent but they are restrained by their maternal instincts. Yes, there have been Women who have committed murder and even killed their own children, but this doesn't compare with men who have done the same thing. In Britain today on average two Women a week are murdered by their male partners but very rarely are men murdered by Women.
This is the problem we all have, we are all stuck in this vicious cycle of fear and violence. To the degree that even if we have a patriarchal ruler of a country who is a loving and caring man, he would find it difficult to stop this cycle of violence. This is
because he knows that if he stops all the propaganda that encourages boy to be violent he then would fear that if his country were invaded, he would have no young man willing to fight in a war and defend the
country.
As I have pointed out before men are the natural submissive sex, because they are naturally very obedient, and very easy trained and indoctrinated.

They can be trained to become violent monsters or trained to become loving and caring people.
We have to show up patriarchal propaganda that it is `natural' for men to be the dominant sex, and that it is `natural' for men to be violent.

DR. PRESCOTT SAYS: This is incorrect. Brutalization is only part of the story. It is the failure of the affectional bond in the maternal-infant/child relationship and in the teen sexual relationship that drives violence--homicide and suicide. Females are affected as well as males. Motherless mothers are violent toward their own offspring. Maternal instinct is destroyed by failed mother love. See attachment.
A recent story in The Washington Post describes how a mother of a one month old infant was microwaved to death for fear that her partner would leave her if he discovered that the infant was not his. An unconfirmed story, which is not important. How can a mother place her own infant in a microwave oven to be burned to death?
Violence among women, particularly toward their own children is increasing--child abuse and neglect and this violence is equally shared by both parents. Culture has failed both mothers and fathers for the reasons that I have made clear and we have created a culture of violence that I am afraid is too late to reverse.
Could not disagree more with your statement: AND SO ONCE AGAIN, THE POINT IS MADE, THAT BRUTALITY IS A MALE PROBLEM, NOT A HUMAN PROBLEM.
It is, in fact, a problem of homo sapiens, and it is the failure of maternal love and sexual love, created by culture, that is the core of our problem.

Indeed I am familiar with your studies, and I was hoping long ago that you would jump into discussion when I was referencing your work continuously. Of course we have the book where your profound studies are featured: “Breastfeeding is Lovemaking between Mother and Child.” See the preview and order from Lulu.com. I just noticed yesterday it is no longer on Amazon.com, must find out what happened, some fluke in the bookwork at Lulu perhaps.
Here is our problem, Dr. Prescott. It is this: ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE VS STATISTICS. And so, citing individual cases of child abuse by females, does not the story change; the violence being PREDOMINANTLY in the untrustworthy hands of males.
After all, as I said, most violence is done IN THE NAME OF WAR, be it tanks and guns, atom bombs, bio-warfare, mind control body abuse warfare testing laboratories, etc. This is all instigated BY THE MALE MENTALITY CALLED PATRIARCHY – RULE OF THE FATHERS, and not by women’s MATRIARCHAL CULTURE – RULE OF THE MOTHERS.
You and I had some good discussions by phone, Dr. Prescott. I did ask you about the effect of the failed Mother love on boys versus girls, and you said your studies did not reflect WHICH GENDER SUFFERED THE MOST.
Your zeitgeist does not include a MATRIARCHAL VS PATRIARCHAL perspective, and you speak of CULTURE as if it was CULTURE ENDOWED BY WOMEN AS WELL AS MEN BUT THAT IS NOT SO.

Very few males consider or ever think about the issues of which I speak – it is exasperating. Academics and scholars, professors, deny the fact that we have had a gender war and that males temporarily “won” and women are living UNDER SIEGE OF THEIR CULTURE, OUR BODIES AND SOMETIMES MINDS IMPRISONED BY THOUGHTS, IDEAS AND ATTITUDES (DELUSIONS) PROPOGATED BY THEM.
Now about male and female violence. I DO NOT DENY that there are SOME VIOLENT FEMALES and they do ATROCITIES and what you say, that Mother love failure and attachment disorder is on the rise for both male and female, and we are seeing the results of this epidemic. You know of what you speak – yes I agree.
But here we need these facts:
(1)HOW MUCH VIOLENCE IS DONE BY MALES AND BY FEMALES? NEED STATISTICS. THIS READS 98% BUT I HAVE A FEELING IT IS WORSE THAN THAT ON THE MALE SIDE, BECAUSE ONCE AGAIN, STATISTICS ARE BEING COLLECTED IN A PATRIARCHY, WHICH HAS REASON TO BE BIASED AGAINST FEMALES, WOULD TRUMP UP THE VIOLENCE OF FEMALES TO A HIGHER DEGREE. EXAMPLE: WOMEN KILL MEN IN SELF DEFENCE. THIS IS CONSIDERED VIOLENCE, NOT SELF DEFENSE. THEY COUNT IT AS IF SHE PERPETRATED MURDER ON A MALE, WILLY NILLY, THE WAY MALES DO UPON WOMEN.
(2)MOST CHILDREN ARE BEING RAISED BY FEMALES AND UNDER DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS AT TIMES – WOMEN WITH CHILDREN BEING THE POOREST OF THE POOR, EVEN BELOW THAT HITS WOMEN OF COLOR.
YOU MADE THE STATEMENT THAT BOTH PARENTS ARE EQUALLY ABUSIVE. WHEN BOTH PARENTS ARE PRESENT I TRUST THAT THE MALES PERPETRATE SEXUAL ABUSE TO A DEGREE WHERE THAT OF A MOTHER PERPETRATING SEXUAL ABUSE ON A CHILD IS ALMOST NON EXISTENT.
STATISTICALLY, I KNOW THAT WOMEN ARE MOSTLY LEFT WITH CHILDREN TO LIVE ON WELFARE, A BARE SUBSISTENCE SITUATION. INDEED, WHEN I HEAR ABOUT ABUSE, IT IS USUALLY WOMEN DRIVEN MAD BY POVERTY, NO HELP, NEEDY CHILDREN, NO SUPPORT, AS A PATRIARCHAL SYSTEM DOES NOT SUPPORT WOMEN, IT IS CLEVERLY DESIGNED TO SEPARATE WOMEN FROM OTHER WOMEN AND LEAVE THEM BEREFT OF FEMALE HELP, AT THE MERCY OF A PATRIARCHAL “SUPPORT SYSTEM” WHICH DOES NOT EXIST ON A WHOLESOME LEVEL.

To give my opinion in this debate, I personally believe that Matriarchy will not only free Women but will free men as well. This is because patriarchy not only oppresses Women but also men.
The lie given out by patriarchal propaganda is that men are `naturally' brutal and violent. Whereas what is really happening is that in patriarchy, we are all caught in a vicious cycle of violence and hatred. Obviously if a father beats up his sons, then his sons think this behaviour is `normal' and will beat up other people and later their own sons. Perpetuating a cycle of violence.
I personally wasn't beaten by my father, but I was made to feel ashamed of myself for not being a macho boy. And I know I wasn't alone in this, most boys I talked with had problems living up to the macho image they were suppose have. And this macho image was all around us, it was in the books and comics we read, and in the films we saw, so we all felt we had to be like John Wayne and become `real' men.
Patriarchy was started by bandits and criminals. These were men that were banished from the first Matriarchal civilizations for their anti-social behaviour and discovered they could make an easy living robbing other people.

What these men discovered was that violence gave them power. You can make other people do what you want if you
inflict violence on them, and you can have sex by raping women.
Having men like this who were able to rob, assault, rape and even murder other people with impunity, made this lifestyle attractive to other men. So these men began to join together in bandit gangs. In time these gangs became so strong that instead of robbing people they devised a protection racket. So people in villages and towns had to pay their local bandit chief, so that they will leave them alone. This was the first taxation.
These bandit leaders were not content with this began to interfere in the lives of the people more and more, setting themselves up as rulers and living within the community they `owned'. These bandits also discovered that their power depended on their violence so it was important that to keep their bandit group strong they had to train them in violence. So the men in bandit gangs were trained in violence, which means they had to inflict violence onto each other. As it was discovered that the more violent a gang became the more fearful the people were of them and the more successful they were in any conflict with other bandit gangs. Because these gang were fighting against other bandit gangs, they needed more men of violence. So they began to recruit men within the communities they ruled and teach them to be violent.
The communities would still have been ruled by Women and they would have objected to this, as they didn't want to see their sons turned into violent monsters. So violence would then be used against Women to undermine their power over their own sons.
In time these bandit chiefs became kings, and emperors and patriarchy even took over the religious life of the people creating male gods and male priests. They then set out to conquer and create a patriarchal world.
This then is why violence, fear, intimidation and hatred are the foundation of patriarchy, and men are the victims of this as well as Women. And it is this cycle of violence and fear that keeps patriarchy going.
In a world of fear and violence the most aggressive and violent people are the ones that rule the world. This is why men rule our world and not Women. If you brutalise boys they learn to hate, and can learn to be so violent that they will kill other people. If you brutalise girls it is true they also can learn to be violent but they are restrained by their maternal instincts. Yes, there have been Women who have committed murder and even killed their own children, but this doesn't compare with men who have done the same thing. In Britain today on average two Women a week are murdered by their male partners but very rarely are men murdered by Women.
This is the problem we all have, we are all stuck in this vicious cycle of fear and violence. To the degree that even if we have a patriarchal ruler of a country who is a loving and caring man, he would find it difficult to stop this cycle of violence. This is
because he knows that if he stops all the propaganda that encourages boy to be violent he then would fear that if his country were invaded, he would have no young man willing to fight in a war and defend the
country.
As I have pointed out before men are the natural submissive sex, because they are naturally very obedient, and very easy trained and indoctrinated.

DR. PRESCOTT SAYS: This is incorrect. Brutalization is only part of the story. It is the failure of the affectional bond in the maternal-infant/child relationship and in the teen sexual relationship that drives violence--homicide and suicide. A recent story in The Washington Post describes how a mother of a one month old infant was microwaved to death for fear that her partner would leave her if he discovered that the infant was not his. An unconfirmed story, which is not important. How can a mother place her own infant in a microwave oven to be burned to death?
Violence among women, particularly toward their own children is increasing--child abuse and neglect and this violence is equally shared by both parents. Culture has failed both mothers and fathers for the reasons that I have made clear and we have created a culture of violence that I am afraid is too late to reverse.

Indeed I am familiar with your studies, and I was hoping long ago that you would jump into discussion when I was referencing your work continuously. Here is our problem, Dr. Prescott. It is this: ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE VS STATISTICS. And so, citing individual cases of child abuse by females, does not the story change; the violence being PREDOMINANTLY in the untrustworthy hands of males.
After all, as I said, most violence is done IN THE NAME OF WAR, be it tanks and guns, atom bombs, bio-warfare, mind control body abuse warfare testing laboratories, etc. This is all instigated BY THE MALE MENTALITY CALLED PATRIARCHY – RULE OF THE FATHERS, and not by women’s MATRIARCHAL CULTURE – RULE OF THE MOTHERS.

Very few males consider or ever think about the issues of which I speak – it is exasperating. I DO NOT DENY that there are SOME VIOLENT FEMALES and they do ATROCITIES and what you say, that Mother love failure and attachment disorder is on the rise for both male and female, and we are seeing the results of this epidemic. You know of what you speak – yes I agree.
But here we need these facts:
(1)HOW MUCH VIOLENCE IS DONE BY MALES AND BY FEMALES? NEED STATISTICS. THIS READS 98% BUT I HAVE A FEELING IT IS WORSE THAN THAT ON THE MALE SIDE, BECAUSE ONCE AGAIN, STATISTICS ARE BEING COLLECTED IN A PATRIARCHY, WHICH HAS REASON TO BE BIASED AGAINST FEMALES, WOULD TRUMP UP THE VIOLENCE OF FEMALES TO A HIGHER DEGREE. EXAMPLE: WOMEN KILL MEN IN SELF DEFENCE. THIS IS CONSIDERED VIOLENCE, NOT SELF DEFENSE. THEY COUNT IT AS IF SHE PERPETRATED MURDER ON A MALE, WILLY NILLY, THE WAY MALES DO UPON WOMEN.

Structural Model (id, ego, superego)
According to Freud, we are born with our Id. The id is an important part of our personality because as newborns, it allows us to get our basic needs met. Freud believed that the id is based on our pleasure principle. In other words, the id wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation. When a child is hungry, the id wants food, and therefore the child cries. When the child needs to be changed, the id cries. When the child is uncomfortable, in pain, too hot, too cold, or just wants attention, the id speaks up until his or her needs are met.
The id doesn't care about reality, about the needs of anyone else, only its own satisfaction. If you think about it, babies are not real considerate of their parents' wishes. They have no care for time, whether their parents are sleeping, relaxing, eating dinner, or bathing. When the id wants something, nothing else is important.
Within the next three years, as the child interacts more and more with the world, the second part of the personality begins to develop. Freud called this part the Ego. The ego is based on the reality principle. The ego understands that other people have needs and desires and that sometimes being impulsive or selfish can hurt us in the long run. Its the ego's job to meet the needs of the id, while taking into consideration the reality of the situation.
By the age of five, or the end of the phallic stage of development, the Superego develops. The Superego is the moral part of us and develops due to the moral and ethical restraints placed on us by our caregivers. Many equate the superego with the conscience as it dictates our belief of right and wrong.
In a healthy person, according to Freud, the ego is the strongest so that it can satisfy the needs of the id, not upset the superego, and still take into consideration the reality of every situation. Not an easy job by any means, but if the id gets too strong, impulses and self gratification take over the person's life. If the superego becomes too strong, the person would be driven by rigid morals, would be judgmental and unbending in his or her interactions with the world. You'll learn how the ego maintains control as you continue to read.
Topographical Model
Freud believed that the majority of what we experience in our lives, the underlying emotions, beliefs, feelings, and impulses are not available to us at a conscious level. He believed that most of what drives us is buried in our unconscious. If you remember the Oedipus and Electra Complex, they were both pushed down into the unconscious, out of our awareness due to the extreme anxiety they caused. While buried there, however, they continue to impact us dramatically according to Freud.
The role of the unconscious is only one part of the model. Freud also believed that everything we are aware of is stored in our conscious. Our conscious makes up a very small part of who we are. In other words, at any given time, we are only aware of a very small part of what makes up our personality; most of what we are is buried and inaccessible.
The final part is the preconscious or subconscious. This is the part of us that we can access if prompted, but is not in our active conscious. Its right below the surface, but still buried somewhat unless we search for it. Information such as our telephone number, some childhood memories, or the name of your best childhood friend is stored in the preconscious.
Because the unconscious is so large, and because we are only aware of the very small conscious at any given time, this theory has been likened to an iceberg, where the vast majority is buried beneath the water's surface. The water, by the way, would represent everything that we are not aware of, have not experienced, and that has not been integrated into our personalities, referred to as the nonconscious.
Ego Defense Mechanisms
We stated earlier that the ego's job was to satisfy the id's impulses, not offend the moralistic character of the superego, while still taking into consideration the reality of the situation. We also stated that this was not an easy job. Think of the id as the 'devil on your shoulder' and the superego as the 'angel of your shoulder.' We don't want either one to get too strong so we talk to both of them, hear their perspective and then make a decision. This decision is the ego talking, the one looking for that healthy balance.
Before we can talk more about this, we need to understand what drives the id, ego, and superego. According to Freud, we only have two drives; sex and aggression. In other words, everything we do is motivated by one of these two drives.
Sex, also called Eros or the Life force, represents our drive to live, prosper, and produce offspring. Aggression, also called Thanatos or our Death force, represents our need to stay alive and stave off threats to our existence, our power, and our prosperity.
Now the ego has a difficult time satisfying both the id and the superego, but it doesn't have to do so without help. The ego has some tools it can use in its job as the mediator, tools that help defend the ego. These are called Ego Defense Mechanisms or Defenses. When the ego has a difficult time making both the id and the superego happy, it will employ one or more of these defenses:

rationalization
supplying a logical or rational reason as opposed to the real reason
stating that you were fired because you didn't kiss up the boss, when the real reason was your poor performance
reaction formation
taking the opposite belief because the true belief causes anxiety
having a bias against a particular race or culture and then embracing that race or culture to the extreme
regression
returning to a previous stage of development
sitting in a corner and crying after hearing bad news; throwing a temper tantrum when you don't get your way
repression
pulling into the unconscious
forgetting sexual abuse from your childhood due to the trauma and anxiety
sublimation
acting out unacceptable impulses in a socially acceptable way
sublimating your aggressive impulses toward a career as a boxer; becoming a surgeon because of your desire to cut; lifting weights to release 'pent up' energy
suppression
pushing into the unconscious
trying to forget something that causes you anxiety
Ego defenses are not necessarily unhealthy as you can see by the examples above. In face, the lack of these defenses, or the inability to use them effectively can often lead to problems in life. However, we sometimes employ the defenses at the wrong time or overuse them, which can be equally destructive.

Structural Model (id, ego, superego)
According to Freud, we are born with our Id. The id is an important part of our personality because as newborns, it allows us to get our basic needs met. Freud believed that the id is based on our pleasure principle. In other words, the id wants whatever feels good at the time, with no consideration for the reality of the situation. When a child is hungry, the id wants food, and therefore the child cries. When the child needs to be changed, the id cries. When the child is uncomfortable, in pain, too hot, too cold, or just wants attention, the id speaks up until his or her needs are met.
The id doesn't care about reality, about the needs of anyone else, only its own satisfaction. If you think about it, babies are not real considerate of their parents' wishes. They have no care for time, whether their parents are sleeping, relaxing, eating dinner, or bathing. When the id wants something, nothing else is important.
Within the next three years, as the child interacts more and more with the world, the second part of the personality begins to develop. Freud called this part the Ego. The ego is based on the reality principle. The ego understands that other people have needs and desires and that sometimes being impulsive or selfish can hurt us in the long run. Its the ego's job to meet the needs of the id, while taking into consideration the reality of the situation.
By the age of five, or the end of the phallic stage of development, the Superego develops. The Superego is the moral part of us and develops due to the moral and ethical restraints placed on us by our caregivers. Many equate the superego with the conscience as it dictates our belief of right and wrong.
In a healthy person, according to Freud, the ego is the strongest so that it can satisfy the needs of the id, not upset the superego, and still take into consideration the reality of every situation. Not an easy job by any means, but if the id gets too strong, impulses and self gratification take over the person's life. If the superego becomes too strong, the person would be driven by rigid morals, would be judgmental and unbending in his or her interactions with the world. You'll learn how the ego maintains control as you continue to read.
Topographical Model
Freud believed that the majority of what we experience in our lives, the underlying emotions, beliefs, feelings, and impulses are not available to us at a conscious level. He believed that most of what drives us is buried in our unconscious. If you remember the Oedipus and Electra Complex, they were both pushed down into the unconscious, out of our awareness due to the extreme anxiety they caused. While buried there, however, they continue to impact us dramatically according to Freud.
The role of the unconscious is only one part of the model. Freud also believed that everything we are aware of is stored in our conscious. Our conscious makes up a very small part of who we are. In other words, at any given time, we are only aware of a very small part of what makes up our personality; most of what we are is buried and inaccessible.
The final part is the preconscious or subconscious. This is the part of us that we can access if prompted, but is not in our active conscious. Its right below the surface, but still buried somewhat unless we search for it. Information such as our telephone number, some childhood memories, or the name of your best childhood friend is stored in the preconscious.
Because the unconscious is so large, and because we are only aware of the very small conscious at any given time, this theory has been likened to an iceberg, where the vast majority is buried beneath the water's surface. The water, by the way, would represent everything that we are not aware of, have not experienced, and that has not been integrated into our personalities, referred to as the nonconscious.
Ego Defense Mechanisms
We stated earlier that the ego's job was to satisfy the id's impulses, not offend the moralistic character of the superego, while still taking into consideration the reality of the situation. We also stated that this was not an easy job. Think of the id as the 'devil on your shoulder' and the superego as the 'angel of your shoulder.' We don't want either one to get too strong so we talk to both of them, hear their perspective and then make a decision. This decision is the ego talking, the one looking for that healthy balance.
Before we can talk more about this, we need to understand what drives the id, ego, and superego. According to Freud, we only have two drives; sex and aggression. In other words, everything we do is motivated by one of these two drives.
Sex, also called Eros or the Life force, represents our drive to live, prosper, and produce offspring. Aggression, also called Thanatos or our Death force, represents our need to stay alive and stave off threats to our existence, our power, and our prosperity.
Now the ego has a difficult time satisfying both the id and the superego, but it doesn't have to do so without help. The ego has some tools it can use in its job as the mediator, tools that help defend the ego. These are called Ego Defense Mechanisms or Defenses. When the ego has a difficult time making both the id and the superego happy, it will employ one or more of these defenses:

denying that your physician's diagnosis of cancer is correct and seeking a second opinion

taking out impulses on a less threatening target

avoiding unacceptable emotions by focusing on the intellectual aspects
focusing on the details of a funeral as opposed to the sadness and grief
projection
placing unacceptable impulses in yourself onto someone else
when losing an argument, you state "You're just Stupid;" homophobia
rationalization
supplying a logical or rational reason as opposed to the real reason
stating that you were fired because you didn't kiss up the boss, when the real reason was your poor performance
reaction formation
taking the opposite belief because the true belief causes anxiety
having a bias against a particular race or culture and then embracing that race or culture to the extreme
regression
returning to a previous stage of development
sitting in a corner and crying after hearing bad news; throwing a temper tantrum when you don't get your way
repression
pulling into the unconscious
forgetting sexual abuse from your childhood due to the trauma and anxiety
sublimation
acting out unacceptable impulses in a socially acceptable way
sublimating your aggressive impulses toward a career as a boxer; becoming a surgeon because of your desire to cut; lifting weights to release 'pent up' energy
suppression
pushing into the unconscious
trying to forget something that causes you anxiety
Ego defenses are not necessarily unhealthy as you can see by the examples above. In face, the lack of these defenses, or the inability to use them effectively can often lead to problems in life. However, we sometimes employ the defenses at the wrong time or overuse them, which can be equally destructive.
